Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions about generating and sharing Valheim world maps with Valmapper.
What is a Valheim world seed?
A seed is the text or number Valheim uses to generate a world. The same seed and game version produce the same world layout, so a map made here can help you plan an existing world.
How do I share a Valheim map?
Generate the map, then select Share. Valmapper copies a link containing the seed to your clipboard. Anyone opening that link can generate the same map in their browser.
Does this map generator upload my seed?
No. World generation runs in your browser using WebAssembly. The seed is stored in the page URL when you share it and in local browser storage for convenience.
Which Valheim locations can I find?
The map includes the start area, boss altars, traders, dungeons, resources, landmarks, and other generated locations. Use the location panel to show or hide categories.
What do the Map, Biome, and Height layers show, and what are alt biomes?
Map renders the terrain the way Valheim's own in-game map does, shaded and coloured by biome. Biome flattens each biome to a single colour so its borders and overall shape are easy to read at a glance. Height renders raw elevation as a grayscale relief, which makes mountain ranges and lowlands easy to spot regardless of biome. Alt biomes is not a layer but an overlay: the Alt biomes row at the top of the sidebar lays the patches this seed dealt its biome variants — a Dark Meadows, a Root Black Forest, a Wolf Mountain — over whichever layer you are on, each patch named on the map.
Where can I build in the Mistlands without the mist?
Where the mist never gathers. Most of the Mistlands is misted, but some of it is left clear — the ground Valheim's own map draws without its violet mist. The Unmisted Mistlands row at the top of the location panel, under Alt biomes, counts how much clear ground the seed has in all, outlines every clear patch on the seed's map and marks the largest with its area, usually 4 to 7 hectares (10 to 17 acres), or a couple of hundred metres across. Hover any patch for its coordinates and size. Mist can still drift in along its edge where the patch runs out to the coast or into another biome.
Can I add my own notes to the map?
Yes. Right-click anywhere on the map — or press and hold on a touch screen — and choose Add note here, then type what you want to remember about that spot. The note appears as a white pin with its first line beside it; hover the pin to read the whole note, or right-click it to edit or delete it. Notes are saved in your browser for that seed, so they are still there when you come back to it, and they are included when you save the map as a PNG. Deleted one by mistake? Select Undo on the bar that appears, press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac), or right-click the map and choose Undo delete — that works for Delete every note too. The Notes row at the top of the location panel hides every pin at once without deleting anything. They are never uploaded and are not part of a shared link.
Can I download the map as an image?
Yes. Once a map finishes generating, select the download button next to Share to save the current view as a PNG.
How do I customize what the map shows?
Use the location panel to turn individual categories and locations on or off, expanding a family to select one of its individual numbered types. In the toolbar, Type Colors colours bosses, dungeons, camps, spawners, resources, treasure, ruins, structures, and landmarks by their specific type instead of one colour per category, Labels captions each marked location with its name, and Icons draws the start, bosses, dungeons, traders, treasure, and your notes as pictures of what they are instead of plain shapes.
Why does generating a map take time?
Valheim worlds contain a large amount of terrain and location data. The map is rendered progressively in your browser, so the progress bar shows the terrain and location passes as they complete.
